Owl Carving (White|M) - Mario Munkara .010
This white owl carving, made by Tiwi Islander artist Mario Munkara, showcases both beauty and cultural meaning.
Mario Munkara is a highly regarded artist from Wurrumiyanga, the largest community located on the south-east of Bathurst Island in the Tiwi Islands.
The owl is significant to the culture of the Tiwi Islands. It is considered a guardian to the Aboriginal people, and as they are nocturnal, they symbolise the power of the night, mystery and wisdom.
Mario's unique carvings are made from a local ironwood, and carefully hand-painted using traditional ochres derived from the earth.
